“As Children’s Commissioner, I have heard from thousands of children about their experiences of the online world. Whilst the majority I heard from in The Big Ambition survey reported feeling safe online, far too many didn’t. I have been shocked to hear from primary school children about the extreme content they have seen online like porn, violence and other inappropriate content.
“It’s vital that parents and carers speak to children about the risks of being online and any inappropriate content they might see online. But ultimately tech companies need to take greater responsibility for their young service users and the content on their platforms. Risks to children are emerging alongside new technologies, and I want to see greater urgency from those companies to keep our children safe on their platforms from online harm. Only when we work together can we make the online world a more positive space for young people.”
