‘This year’s Girls’ Attitudes Survey found that 77% of girls and young women have experienced online harm in the last year, whilst girls as young as 7 are increasingly seeing rude pictures and mean comments online. When I was 11, I begged my parents for a phone, but I wasn’t allowed one until I was 13 and starting secondary school. Looking back, although I didn’t like it at the time, I am glad that my parents made the decision to shield me from social media at that age. It concerns me most that the age of young people reporting harm online continues to fall, evidencing that not enough is being done to prevent young people being exposed to potentially harmful material at an early age.’
