‘The internet is part of our daily lives, and as technology continues to rapidly develop, our online safety is paramount. Girlguiding supports Safer Internet Day and believes that the internet should be a safe place for everyone, where young people can connect, learn, and grow. It is evident that online safety is more important than ever; Girlguiding research shows that 83% of girls aged 13-21 years have seen upsetting content online in 2023. This harmful content is becoming more prevalent, and we see increasingly damaging consequences. As many as 34% of girls aged between 11 and 21 have tried a diet after viewing images on social media, compared to 22% in 2016. It is essential that more must be done to protect the safety and welfare of young people on the internet.’
