A deep dive into the Safer Internet Day 2025 education resources

13 Dec 2024 Becca Cawthorne

With two months to go until Safer Internet Day, we take a look at the official, free resources to help you get involved in the day with your school or education setting.

What’s this year’s theme?

Safer Internet Day is the UK’s biggest celebration of online safety, and the theme each year is chosen to reflect a current issue affecting children and young people online.

This year’s theme is ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online’.
The ideas explored in the theme are:

  • Spotting the signs of an online scam
  • The different ways scams can appear online and the forms they can take
  • Responding to online scams – such as talking to trusted adults, making a report and avoiding victim blaming
  • New emerging risks online, such as romance scams, catfishing and sextortion

Who can use the education resources?

Anyone! The education resources are there to help educators and professionals – whether as part of a school, charity, youth group, police service, business, library or wider – to deliver engaging and interactive Safer Internet Day sessions.
The activities will provide opportunities to hear from children and young people about their knowledge of scams online, and any experiences they may have had. They will gain better understanding of scams and what they can do if they need support and guidance. By understanding their perspectives and experiences, we can provide the very best support and advice.

What is included in the educational resources?

This year’s Safer Internet Day resources include:

  • An assembly to introduce this year’s theme
  • A selection of activities relating to different aspects of the theme with ideas of how to scaffold the activities for young people with additional learning needs.
  • An interactive quiz to accompany the activity pack.
  • Top tips for parents and carers and young people.

Only have a few minutes spare?

There are a range of activities in each pack, and if you only have a short time to spend covering Safer Internet Day on the 11th of February then we have the resources for you! If you work with:

For work with 3-7 year olds

Use the ‘Personal information card games’. A fun activity where learners can either sort or match different pieces of personal information.

For work with 7-11 year olds

Take a look at ‘Let’s go phishing’.  A quick activity where learners decide whether a scam is phishing or not. Any phishing scams are put into Trustworthy Trout’s fishbowl.

For work with 11-14 year olds

Work through some of the ‘Signs of a scam’ slides. This is where learners can discuss the examples provided and spot any signs that they could be scam.

For work with 14-18 year olds

Use the ‘Help or harm?’ activity to introduce the topic of victim blaming. Learners plot different responses on a scale ranging from helpful to harmful.
