“Today, on Safer Internet Day 2026, NICCY reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that children and young people in Northern Ireland have the right to be safe, supported, and protected. The importance of this year’s theme, ‘Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’, can’t be understated. As more children hear about and use AI online, it’s important that they have the skills and confidence to make safe, responsible online choices.”
“As AI technology develops at remarkable speed, so too does the risk of harmful misuse, including digitally created material intended to coerce or distress children. Online safety must remain at the heart of children’s lives, and safeguarding must evolve to meet these new challenges.”
“Parents and carers play a crucial role. I urge them to speak openly with their children about what they are doing online, who they are interacting with, and how to recognise when something doesn’t feel right.”
“Children should be encouraged to talk to a trusted adult if they ever feel worried, reporting their concerns immediately. They must be protected and educated about boundaries, respectful relationships, online harm and safety – and this requires a whole society response.”
“It is essential that we listen to the voices of children and young people. Their views, concerns, and lived experiences with AI are invaluable in helping us shape a safe digital landscape, being mindful of the fact the UNCRC General Comment 25 explicitly states that children’s rights apply in the digital world and that the best interests of every child is a primary consideration. Full and direct incorporation of the UNCRC into domestic law is also essential to ensuring their rights are upheld in the digital world as clearly as in the real one.”
“My office is here to support children, young people, and families. Working together, we can create a safer online world where children can explore, learn and thrive without fear.”
