“Safer Internet Day is an opportunity to reflect on the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI). It’s crucial that children are safe when they use it. They must be protected from harmful content, and given the tools and skills to recognise misinformation generated by AI. They should be involved in discussions and developments around AI, to learn how to use it safely, so they are active participants in what is likely to become an increasing presence in their lives.”
“The internet can help children realise their rights to access information, to expression, to education, and to play. The use of AI can open up opportunities to children, for example in making online information more accessible. However, we remain concerned at the risks children face online, including as a result of AI tools.”
“It’s vital to recognise children are rights-holders, both on and offline, and they have a right to be kept safe. Government has a duty to make sure AI regulation protects children’s rights and keeps pace with its development.”
