28 Nov 2024 UK SIC

The UK Safer Internet Centre is proud to celebrate the third anniversary of StopNCII.org, the groundbreaking global tool by our partners at SWGfL, designed to combat non-consensual intimate image abuse (NCII). This year, StopNCII.org is thrilled to announce that over 1,000,000 image hashes have been created to protect individuals from the non-consensual sharing of intimate content.

This achievement represents a remarkable 130% increase in the use of the tool compared to the previous year, reflecting growing global awareness and empowerment to address NCII. As the fight against intimate image abuse continues, this milestone highlights the crucial role that collective action and technological innovation play in safeguarding individuals.

Expanding Reach with New Partners

As part of this celebration, Bitly and Resolver were announced as the newest partners of StopNCII.org. Their participation strengthens StopCNII.org’s ability to combat NCII across even more platforms worldwide.

These new additions join an existing coalition of 12 industry partners, including:

– Facebook
– TikTok
– Reddit
– Instagram
– OnlyFans
– Threads
– Pornhub
– Snap Inc
– Niantic
– Playhouse
– RedGIFS
– Microsoft Bing

This growing alliance underscores the shared commitment to preventing NCII and protecting individuals across the globe. Over the past three years, the collaboration between StopNCII.org and these partners has been instrumental in providing essential safeguards for hundreds of thousands of individuals.

A Global Movement

The increased adoption of StopNCII.org reflects a broader, global recognition of the urgency to tackle NCII. Supported by advocacy from governments, including recognition from the White House, the initiative demonstrates how international collaboration can make a tangible difference.

Sophie Mortimer, Revenge Porn Helpline Manager at SWGfL said:
”Our focus remains on ensuring that individuals across the world are protected from intimate image abuse and can feel safe online. We continue to encourage more industry platforms to join the StopNCII.org initiative and further the reach of this powerful tool.”

How StopNCII.org Works

StopNCII.org uses world-first, on-device hashing technology to empower users to take control of their intimate content. Here’s how it works:

User Privacy First: Individuals concerned about intimate image abuse can create unique digital fingerprints, known as hashes, directly on their devices. The original content never leaves the user’s control.

Hashing Technology: These hashes—a string of letters and numbers—are securely shared with StopNCII.org while ensuring the image or video itself remains private.

Partner Moderation: Participating partners use these hashes to identify and moderate content on their platforms. If a hash matches an image uploaded online and violates the platform’s policies, it can be removed and blocked from further distribution.

Looking Ahead

StopNCII.org’s growth is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in tackling online harms. At the UK Safer Internet Centre, we are committed to fostering a safer online environment through initiatives like StopNCII.org. We celebrate this milestone as a step forward in the global effort to end NCII and reaffirm our dedication to supporting individuals in reclaiming their digital safety.
