161: Not All Screen Time is Created Equal: Associations with Mental Health Vary by Activity and Gender

Dr Jean Twenge & Eric Farley, San Diego State University (2021)

A summary of the results of a large-scale quantitative study examining the associations between different types of screen activities (social media, internet, gaming, and TV) and mental health indicators for boys and girls. Data were drawn from the Millennium Cohort Study in 2015 (when participants were approximately 14 years old) (n=11,427). The analyses were intended to determine the association between time spent on specific screen media activities and the risk of negative mental health outcomes.
