“Tackling online harms is a priority for Girlguiding. Our 2025 Girls’ Attitude Survey showed that 77% of 7–21-year-old girls and young women had experienced an online harm in the last year and 92% tell us they have taken at least one action to enhance their safety. But sadly this doesn’t guarantee they won’t see distressing, humiliating or explicit content. Girlguiding research has found that more than a quarter (26%) of children aged 13-18 have seen a sexualised deepfake of a celebrity, friend, teacher or themselves. This year’s Safer Internet Day theme ‘Smart tech, safe choices’ highlights the good AI can achieve, but also the growing dangers it poses. Girlguiding continues to support girls in learning about AI, including through some of our industry partners. We will continue to highlight girls’ and young women’s experiences with the technology they use – including AI deepfakes. We want to see increasing considering of user safety in tech design and it is vital that Government’s approach to regulation keeps pace with this technology to prevent harms.”
