Looking at the ‘Goodbye Meta AI’ hoax
An Instagram story has been shared by more than 600,000 people online. The post in question shows a picture that encourages people to reshare it claiming that, Meta would no longer be able to use their information for the development of Meta AI if they do.
Meta have taken action on stories which have shared this hoax, with these messages now having a label saying “false information” before you can view them.
What data is being used
As Meta is developing their new AI experience they are looking to use user data to improve their service.
This data will only be gathered from public information on accounts over people aged 18 and over, this data includes public posts, and the comments users have made on posts.
How to opt out of Meta AI
Although sharing an image on an Instagram story is not a way of opting out of your data being used, it is possible to object to this within the Instagram app.
Top opt out of your data being used in this way:
- Open your profile page within Instagram
- Click on the settings and privacy menu in the top right hand corner (shown by three lines)
- Scroll down to ‘Privacy Centre’ and click on this
- On this page there is information about Meta AI, and a hyperlink where you can click to ‘object to the use of your information for these purposes’
