‘87% of content reported was successfully actioned after escalation with industry’ – Report Harmful Content release 2021 Quarterly Reports

Report Harmful Content (A service provided by the UK Safer Internet Centre) has gathered figures from the two previous quarterly figures. This data shows what trends the service has seen throughout the year including the types of reports they have received. Reporting Period: April 1st – June 30th 2021

Main trends:

  • Pornographic content and bullying/ repeated harassment most common reason for reporting
  • Wider issues concerning allegations of abuse made about clients in harassment reports
  • Wider issue of intimate image abuse in many reports where ongoing harassment and stalking is predominant issue
  • Wider issues of actively searching for harmful content in pornography reports
  • Rise in reports relating to conspiracy theories and misinformation particularly in relation to the Covid-19 vaccine

Key statistics:

  • 87% of content reported was successfully actioned after escalation with industry (i.e. removed, restricted or regained access to)
  • 85% of reports we signposted clients towards the correct reporting routes and/ or relevant support services, empowering them to take action, reporting via the correct channels
  • 35% of the content actioned was done so by industry within 72 hours of our request

Reporting Period: July 1st – September 30th 2021

Main trends:

  • Pornographic content and bullying or repeated harassment most common reason for reporting
  • Rise in number of reports about suicide or self-harm content
  • Wider issues of hate speech linked to cultural sensitivities in many reports
  • Wider issues concerning allegations of abuse made about clients in harassment reports
  • Wider issue of intimate image abuse in many harassment reports
  • Wider issues of actively searching for harmful content in pornography reports

Key Statistics:

  • 82% of content reported was successfully actioned after escalation with industry (i.e. removed, restricted or regained access to)
  • 88% of reports we signposted clients towards the correct reporting routes and/ or relevant support services, empowering them to take action, reporting via the correct channels.
  • 17% of the content actioned was done so by industry within 72 hours of our request
