The purpose of Safer Internet Day is to promote the safe, responsible, and positive use of digital technology, particularly for children and young people.

We want to start a national conversation about online issues or themes that speak to the things young people are seeing and experiencing online.

It is a landmark event in the online safety calendar. Observed worldwide, it is a time for celebration, insight and reflection, and an opportunity to come together to make the internet a safer and better place for all, especially children and young people.

The UK Safer Internet Centre is responsible for coordinating Safer Internet Day in the UK. Each year, the celebration sees thousands of organisations get involved to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people. 

No! Globally, Safer Internet Day is celebrated in over 180 countries, coordinated by the joint Insafe/INHOPE network, with the support of the European Commission, and national Safer Internet Centres across Europe.

Safer Internet Day is celebrated worldwide under a global theme of ‘Together for a better internet‘.

In the UK, the theme for 2027 is ‘Reflect on Tech: exploring digital wellbeing and our relationship with technology’.

No! We want everyone to take part to promote better online habits and digital wellbeing! Schools, workplaces, community groups, youth organisations, charities working with children and young people, policymakers, public bodies and technology companies can all sign up as supporters.

Don’t worry if you don’t know your plans yet – you can still register by sharing your logo and organisation name. The supporter’s page is also a great place to get some inspiration from and see what other schools are planning.

Parents and carers can also take part by continuing the conversations about digital wellbeing at home. We will also publish some top tips for parents and for young people in November, along with the education resources and quizzes for 7-1 year olds.

You don’t have to sign up as a supporter to take part in Safer Internet Day, but it helps us know a bit more about how many people we are reaching. Registered supporters can also download a certificate to show they are taking part.

Firstly, we’d love you to sign up as a supporter! As a supporter, there is an option to sign up to keep up to date with all the news around Safer Internet Day.

For schools and education settings

If you are from a school, we have ready-made assemblies, presentations and lesson plans in our education resources to make it really easy to participate. These come ready to use for different age groups (3-7, 7-11, 11-14 and 14-18).

Another way to take part is to tune in to the BBC Teach live lesson which will be broadcast at 11am on Safer Internet Day (9 February, 2027).

For families, individuals and other settings

Our resources aren’t just for schools! Youth organisations, families, workplaces and other non-educational settings can all take part simply by having some conversations around digital wellbeing and online safety.

We have top tips for parents/carers and young people as well as quizzes for 7-14 year olds, alongside the education resources which are all free to use.

In your workplace you could hold an awareness event, add some information to your intranet, write a blog, put something in your internal (or external) newsletters

Yes! The education resources are written by the education team from Childnet. The team are all experienced educators and work directly with 3-18 year olds, teaching staff and parents and carers. They deliver online safety sessions in schools, nurseries, education settings and workplaces.

Childnet, a partner of the UK Safer Internet Centre, offer online safety education visits for 3-18 year olds, along with staff training and sessions for parents and carers. You can make an enquiry here. There won’t be any sessions available on Safer Internet Day itself, but they would be very happy to talk to you about delivering sessions in your school, education setting or workplace any other time.

SWGfL provides online safety training to a wide variety of professionals working with children and young people. Their expert team of trainers are able to tailor sessions based on your needs, covering a number of topics related to staying safe online. 

No! Taking part in Safer Internet Day is completely free, including all of our downloadable resources, quizzes and top tips. We want as many people as possible to take part.
